1- Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE): We established community-based early childhood centers to provide children with a safe and stimulating learning environment. Trained educators provided developmentally appropriate education, health, and nutrition services to children aged 3-5 years old.
2- Parenting Education: We provided parents and caregivers with skills and knowledge to support their child's development. This included training in child-rearing practices, nutrition, health, and hygiene.
3- Community Mobilization: We worked with community leaders and stakeholders to raise awareness and promote the importance of early childhood development. This included community events, meetings, and advocacy efforts. 4- Capacity Building: We provided training and support to local organizations and government agencies to strengthen their capacity to provide quality ECD services.Based on the assessment, the Petronille Healthy Society (PHS) worked closely with local partners to develop and implement a comprehensive early childhood development program. The program included a range of interventions, including health and nutrition services, caregiver training, and community education and awareness-raising activities. The program also prioritized building the capacity of local partners to sustain the program beyond the initial implementation phase. To achieve this, PHS provided extensive training and support to local organizations and community members, including technical assistance and guidance on program management and monitoring, and evaluation.
Throughout the implementation phase, PHS maintained close communication with local partners and stakeholders, soliciting regular feedback and making adjustments to the program as necessary based on feedback and evaluation data. The program was monitored and evaluated regularly to ensure effectiveness and to identify areas for improvement. Overall, the program involved a collaborative and iterative approach, with the Petronille Healthy Society working closely with local partners and stakeholders to develop and implement a tailored solution to the specific challenges facing early childhood development in Burundi.

We also trained and supported local community health workers and caregivers, building capacity and sustainability for the program beyond the end of our program. We also recognized the value of integrating technology into our program, as mobile phones and tablets were utilized for data collection and sharing of resources.

In addition, PHS plans to conduct further research to identify other innovative and effective strategies for promoting early childhood development in Africa. This includes exploring the potential of new technologies and digital platforms to deliver early childhood services, as well as working to address the systemic challenges and barriers to access that exist across the continent.
