The Challenges
Petronille Healthy Society (PHS) is committed to addressing poverty and malnutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our team recognizes the urgent need to achieve zero hunger by 2030, but we also understand the critical role of data in achieving this goal.
Despite calls for data revolutions from various institutions, data gaps and limitations continue to hinder stakeholders in the nutrition and food systems sector. This lack of data makes it difficult for local change agents to make effective decisions and track their progress. As a result, there are several questions that need to be answered, including:
- Why is data needed, and how can it be used to support decision-making in food systems and nutrition across nations in Sub-Saharan Africa?
- How can we obtain accurate data on famine in the Horn of Africa?
- What is the status of nutrition and food systems in specific geographies, and how can data be used to advise strategic and financial investment planning efforts?
- What is the progress of particular nutrition and food systems programs and initiatives, and how can data be used to help track and improve their performance?
- How can we measure progress and hold all parties accountable for nutrition and food systems efforts at all levels?
Our Approach
At Petronille Healthy Society, we help develop data tools and advocate for improved data in nutrition in Sub-Saharan Africa. We have been working with change agents on a wide range of factors to answer critical data questions to address malnutrition in the region.
Our approach is centered on putting users at the heart of our efforts, developing user-centered data monitoring products, and strengthening operations and capacity to support data uptake. Some of our experts conduct user research and problem identification on the ground to better understand how data can help solve practical challenges facing our partners in the nutrition, education, and health sectors.
One example of our work in action is the use of scorecards, dashboards, and performance metrics to improve farmers' fertilizer uptake in Sub-Saharan Africa. We have been developing these tools to help countries transform their raw data into insights that can inform action.
In 2019, we helped design a series of dashboards to support the progression of agricultural transformation across priority countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Additionally, our team is currently partnering with Local Farmers Markets (LFL) in several countries in the region, piloting a new approach to incentivizing the collection and usage of crucial fertilizer data to accelerate fertilizer delivery to smallholder rural farmers.
Finally, we advocate for improved data in food systems and nutrition. Our team has supported various food systems data efforts for the past two years and will continue to do so to achieve our goal of zero hunger in Sub-Saharan Africa by 2030. We believe that with our approach, we can help create a world where poverty and malnutrition are a thing of the past. Join us on this journey today.
